Many floods are caused by the surcharging of sewers. Sewers surcharge when the flows into the sewer exceed the flow capacity of the sewer. Replacement of sewers subject to surcharging can be both costly and time consuming.

The ABC Fluid Technology Solutions Surcharge Protection System (SPS) is a low cost system to temporarily contain the effluent from a sewer, which may otherwise issue from a manhole and cause flooding and associated damage, until such time as the risk of flooding has gone away. In containing the effluent, damage to property and associated public health issues are avoided.

The SPS comprises a folded membrane that is located directly under the manhole cover. When the sewer surcharges, the pressure causes the membrane to unfold and to push aside the manhole cover.

In its fully unfolded /extended position the SPS rises 2 metres above the level of the manhole.

The effluent within the sewer is all contained within the membrane apart from a small quantity of effluent that may escape through the air vent hole in the top of the membrane. After every use of the SPS, it should be washed down and refolded in place.

When access into the manhole is required, the SPS unit can be simply removed from the manhole and put back in position afterwards.
